The Homestead Projects for Street Children, successfully transitions neglected and traumatised children away from the street, back home or onto successful independent living through a holistic set of prevention, outreach, stabilisation, residential care and family reunification and youth transition programmes. 

The Homestead seeks to appoint 4 qualified Child & Youth Care Workers at our Child & Youth Care Centre (CYCC) in Khayelitsha. The Bridge CYCC is a residential home where 65 children are rehabilitated and steered towards future security and opportunity. We provide vulnerable children and youth with access to a safe consistent space and family preservation, re-entry into school, school homework support, crises intervention, healthy nutrition, life-skills development, psycho-social counselling and therapeutic support, recreation and sports activities.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Ensure planned activities/programmes are: developmental, recreational, age appropriate, needs based to comply with Regulations 75 of the Children’s Act
  • Development Programming and Reporting – Compile a monthly plan for implementation of programmes for the boys within your team, incorporating all your shifts including weekends and submit to the Manager and Supervisor
  • Ensure that the boys daily scheduled routines are adhered to
  • Ensure each child receives a plate of nutritious food timeously
  • Take responsibility for obtaining and administering all prescribed medication as per the prescription of each child
  • Conduct planned home visits for each child within your team, home visits must be linked to the child’s IDP
  • Submit a written report on each home visit to the Social Worker within 4 days
  • Discipline of boys is handled sensitively and appropriately as required by the Homestead policies and relevant Children’s Act
  • Identify and manage each child’s emotional needs holistically and sensitively e.g.: Attachment issues, ADHD
  • Housekeeping – Responsible for the unit keys when on duty
  • Record any incidents in the incident report book, incidents must be recorded immediately, or prior to end of shift and must be true and accurate. Review incidents with CYCW supervisor
  • To continually attend training courses in order to ensure ongoing skills development
  • Ensure rules are followed and consequences implemented consistently
  • Run and facilitate rewards program

Minimum Requirements

  • Proficient in isiXhosa, Afrikaans and English
  • Registered Aux CYCW or CYCW (valid proof of up to date SACSSP registration) 
  • Experience in the child care field
  • Good people skills and communication
  • Understanding of the respective Acts, Policies and procedures and legislation – committed and follow through
  • Displaying warmth, empathy, affection, non-judgemental, understanding attitude
  • Willingness to complete a pre-employment Polygraph examination as well as to undergo in-depth reference and character checks.
  • Confirm that your name does not appear on the Child Protection register and there is no reason why you cannot work with children.
  • Emotional intelligence, insight into behaviour management, good organizing and administrative skills
  • Basic computer skills or willingness to attend courses to learn
  • Drivers License preferred
